Before starting to design and cutting your custom bucket hat, you will need to gather the necessary materials. Here is a list of supplies you will need:

Make a Custom Bucket Hat with Cricut

Step 1

To begin, open the Design Space and access the project. Modify the text to include the desired last name, then adjust the width and height to the preferred size. After ensuring that everything looks good, select the entire design and click on the “attach” button to keep all components in place.

Step 2

Next, click on “Make it”. If you’re using smart material like me, make sure to choose “Without Mat”. Since I’m using iron-on, I will toggle the mirror button so the design looks backwards. This ensures that it reads the right way once it’s pressed on the hat.

Step 3

Next, select the material you’re using and load it into the machine. If you’re using iron-on like I am, make sure you put the shiny side down. Once the material is loaded and your machine has verified that you have enough material, click the “Go” button. While waiting for the cutting machine, you can turn on the hat press machine to get it warmed up. You can use Cricut’s heat guide to determine the appropriate temperature for your specific project. In this case, I’ve set my hat press to the second setting.

Step 4

Once the machine has finished cutting, unload your material and trim it down to the size you need, saving the extra material for future projects. Then take your weeder tool and carefully remove any excess material that you don’t want in your design. This will help ensure that your finished product looks clean and professional.

Step 5

After completing the weeding process, it’s time to get the hat ready. Place the hat on the hat form and if it’s a bucket hat, make sure to pull out the lip to make the hat flat on the form. Preheat the hat for 5-10 seconds to eliminate any wrinkles or moisture. Then, place the design on the hat where you want it. Use a few pieces of strong and heat-resistant tape to secure the design on all sides. This will prevent the design from shifting during the pressing process.

Step 6

After ensuring that the design is securely in place, use the hat press to press the design onto the hat. In the case of using cold peel iron-on material like me, wait until the design cools down before removing the tape and backing. When peeling off the backing, apply pressure to the iron-on material to make sure it adheres well to the hat.

Now you can proudly wear your bucket hat!
